Wine By the Steel Barrels

I started writing this blog a couple weeks ago.  We were having some challenges with the Internet connection in our new house so I never finished it.  I've got a lot to catch everyone up on but I figured I'd go ahead and complete this post because who doesn't LOVE the idea of wine on tap.

Tom and I were first introduced to wine on tap during a 2011 trip to Tuscany.  Click here to read my blog about that trip.  We stopped at this winery right off the road and a guy drove up on a tractor with a bunch of jugs.  We figured he was a restaurant owner.  The owners filled up his jugs with what looked like a gas pump.  Meet the source of your table or house wine.

As I meet new people or reconnect with people I met in the hotel, I ask for tips.  What recommendations they have so far on where to go, what to see, and where to eat.  Several people mentioned Cantine Muraro Enomas in Longare, which was just about 10 minutes from our hotel.

On Saturday a couple weeks ago we drove out there with the boys to check it out.  We didn't really know what to expect.  It's not a wine tasting experience like we're used to in Arizona.

First, there is no charge for tasting.  They have a shelf full of wine glasses and you just grab one and go around and taste whatever you want.  You taste the wine straight out of the stainless steel barrels and they also have beer-like taps you can sample more wines.

Second, there's no real seating area.  I think the idea is you taste, select, purchase and head home to enjoy your vino.

Once you figure out what you want you just fill up your jugs or bottles with your chosen vino and pay at the register.  They have reusable bottles you can purchase if you don't have your own.

I think Tom has been back at least twice since we were first there.  The most recent time I think he got about 14 liters of wine and it cost less than 15 euros.

We figure this will be a fun place to take guests.  Unlimited tasting...sign us up!

Wines on tap - cameos by the boys
The quintessential grape photo.  I can't resist.
If you're inclined or don't come prepared they also have it bottled.
